1600 km solo kayak expedition from Durban to Cape Town
10 janvier 2013

Day 45 & 46 - Arniston

Sorry for the delay, I have had internet problems...

Robert arrived on Jan 8, day 45, at Arniston. He did not comment much about the kayaking itself... 30 km done, totalling 1399 km...

He saw two hammerhead sharks, one turtle and another big jelly fish...

The winds starting to blow strongly against him, Robert only managed to do 3.5 km/hour during the last 3 hours of his paddling day... He was very tired as he arrived in Arniston but got cheered up by the warm welcome the local kids gave him. They were very impressed with him and treated him as a hero... They later on looked after his kayak so that he could go and get some delicious food from a local eatery... As I asked if he still had money with him, he said he did but everything is wet and mouldy, including his clothes...

He is also starting to develop a rash under his chin, from the rubbing of the kayak jacket...

Yesterday, Wednesday 9 Jan, he had to have a day's rest as the winds were way to strong to paddle...

Today, day 47, the winds are still blowing and the swell is very big, but Robert has decided to try to reach Struisbaai, 27 km away...

You are so close to finishing the 1600 Km journey, so don't give up. Can imagine it must be more and more difficult to keep the energy going.the closer you get to that finish. What an incredible achievement, both mentally and physically. My son and I met you on Brenton Beach on 26 December and have been following your progress ever since. Enjoy the last few days on the ocean with the great whites and others.
